Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), also known as intra-cranial injury, occurs when brain damage is caused by sudden trauma. One of two subsets of acquired brain injury (ABI), TBI includes two types of resulting head injuries: a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. A closed head injury occurs when the head suddenly and violently hits an object which does not break through the skull but the skull is pierced by an object which then enters brain tissue in a penetrating head injury.
Some of the areas of the brain that can be damaged by a Traumatic Brain Injury include the cerebellum, brain stem, and cerebral hemispheres. Depending on the extent of the brain damage, symptoms of the injury can be mild, moderate, or severe. Like the symptoms, the outcome of a brain injury can be mild (complete recovery) to severe (permanent disability or death).
